Recognizing Excellence: Awards, Prizes and Scholarships

Rowena Reed Kostellow Award
1990, the Rowena Group presented its first professional award to Gina Caspi (MID ’80). Since then, annual awards have been given to a diverse group of distinguished recipients: master teachers and designers from multiple disciplines, including industrial, automotive, jewelry, glass, ceramic, graphic, and exhibition design, and distinguished practitioners in architecture, music, and the arts. The first trophy was designed and produced by a Pratt ID student, which has now become a tradition. We select an example of one of the best 3-D exercises and commission the student to transform it into a limited edition trophy cast in bronze or carved in exotic wood (copies go to the president of Pratt, the ID department, and the student).
“Rowena embodied all that is special about Pratt, and her teachings have helped make the Institute what it is today,” said Thomas Schutte, Former Pratt Institute President, upon accepting the 2017 Annual Rowena Reed Kostellow Award.
Young Designer Award
In 2017, the Rowena Group created a new annual award to honor outstanding young designers in the early years of their careers. Awardees receive recognition and a student-designed trophy presented at the annual Rowena Reed Kostellow Award event.

Student Prize
In 1995, the Rowena Group initiated an annual student prize and a financial stipend to a student nominated by faculty and chosen based on juried work. In 2010, the group expanded the prize to include one student from each year, sophomore through senior; in 2014, a graduate student prize. Since 1995, students have received more than $50,000 in prizes ranging from $500 to $2,500.
