In 1940, Alexander Kostellow established the first Industrial Design pedagogy. As Pratt Institute’s Supervisor of Design and Structure, he created an experimental comprehensive first-year program for all students, which he called Foundation. It gave students the skills to think visually and abstractly through color, graphic composition, 3D form, and figure drawing exercises. The Foundation program is now essential to most art and design schools. Kostellow’s Teachings, collected in the book Elements of Design, continue to guide educators in the 21st century.
